Indian National Flag Code: Comprehensive Rules, Do's & Don'ts, and Proper Protocols

The Indian National Flag is a symbol of pride and dignity. Its display is governed by the Flag Code of India, 2002, and violations are punishable under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. This guide covers the rules, do’s and don’ts of flag hoisting, along with the proper protocols for hoisting and lowering the Tricolour.


Key Rules of the Flag Code of India (2002)

  • Shape & Size: Must be rectangular, ratio 3:2.
  • Material: Traditionally Khadi; cotton, silk, wool, and polyester are permissible. Avoid plastic flags.
  • Colours & Symbol: Saffron on top, white in the middle with a navy-blue Ashoka Chakra of 24 spokes, green at the bottom.
  • Display: Citizens, organisations, and educational institutions may hoist on all days, respecting dignity.
  • Position: Saffron at top (horizontal) or to the observer’s right (vertical).
  • Storage: Fold neatly; triangle fold is recommended.

Do’s of Flag Hoisting

  • Hoist the flag briskly as a mark of respect and lower it slowly with dignity.
  • Stand at attention and salute during hoisting/lowering. Play or sing the National Anthem.
  • Display the flag in a place of honour, never obscured by other objects.
  • If hoisted at night, illuminate it properly.
  • Ensure the flag is clean, undamaged, and vibrant.
  • After use, fold it neatly and store respectfully.
  • Dispose of damaged or soiled flags privately, preferably by burning or burial.

Don'ts of Flag Hoisting

  • Never let the flag touch the ground, floor, or water, and never step on it.
  • Do not drape it over vehicles except those of designated dignitaries.
  • Do not use it as clothing, drapery, or printed on attire.
  • Do not use as decoration (festoon, rosette, tablecloth, etc.).
  • Never write, print, or place emblems/objects on the flag.
  • No other flag should be placed higher or alongside.
  • Never fly a damaged, faded, or soiled flag.
  • Only fly at half-mast if directed by the Government.
  • Do not use the flag for advertisements or commercial purposes.
  • Never store it carelessly or crumpled.

Proper Protocols for Hoisting the Indian Flag

  • Hoist briskly to the peak of the staff.
  • Ensure saffron is on top (horizontal) or to the right (vertical).
  • Stand at attention, salute, and play/sing the National Anthem.
  • Always hoist in a position of prominence.

Proper Protocols for Lowering the Indian Flag

  • Lower slowly and with dignity.
  • Salute during lowering.
  • Lower at sunset unless illuminated for night display.
  • Fold carefully after lowering and store respectfully.
